How to Clean and Maintain Hardwood Floors

There are countless benefits to installing hardwood floors.

Hardwood flooring enhances the look of your home, boosts its value by up to 80%, and improves air quality. Hardwood is easy to clean and if properly cared for, it will give you a lifetime of beauty.

We are going to tell you how to maintain and clean hardwood floors the right way. When you put time and effort into keeping your floors clean, they will look and feel good for years to come. If you neglect them, you may have to refinish or replace them sooner than you would like.

Fortunately, cleaning them isn't time-consuming or difficult, so keep reading and learn what you must do.

Regular Wood Floor Cleaning

The best thing you can do for your hardwood floors is to clean them daily. Dust or sweep every day and vacuum them frequently with a soft head or soft brush attachment.

Dirt and debris can cause scratching when people drag them around with their feet. Dust and pet hair can also settle in the cracks between planks, which can be difficult to get out.

Use Good Cleaning Products

Use only wood floor cleaners which are recommended by the manufacturer.

Never use harsh chemicals on your hardwood floor, as they'll fade the finish on the wood. There are various wood cleaners available that you can use, but don't overuse them.

Don't Clean Hardwood Floors with Excessive Water

Wood is very sensitive to the elements. Being too wet or too dry is always going to cause issues. When cleaning your hardwood floors with your cleaning solution, make sure to do it with a damp mop or cloth.

Never use a wet mop or soak the floors. Use a microfiber mop, which retains about 20 times less water than a traditional mop. This should give you the clean that your floors need without giving them too much moisture.

Wipe up spills as they occur. Wipe dry spills with lightly dampened cloth.

FLOOR PROTECTION

Use protectors under furniture, chairs and appliances to prevent scratching.

You can touch up scratches using a stain marker from a wood furniture touch-up kit.

Use area rug in front of the kitchen sink. This will prevent premature wear.

Use wipe-off mats inside and outside the house as dirt and grit can scratch the finish.

Keep your pet’s nails trimmed to help minimize scratching.
